Day 30 – To Be People of the Word and Spirit
Scriptures to Meditate On and Pray Through –
- Devote yourselves to prayer (persevere in abiding), being watchful and thankful. Pray also together for us that God would open unto us a door for the Word, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ... – Colossians 4:2-3a
- We know, dear brothers and sisters, that God loves you and has chosen you to be his own people. For when we brought you the Gospel (Good News of Jesus), it was not only with words but also with power, for the Holy Spirit gave you full assurance that what we said was true. And you know of our concern for you from the way we lived when we were with you. So you received the message with joy from the Holy Spirit in spite of the severe suffering it brought you. In this way, you imitated both us and the Lord. – 1 Thessalonians 1:4-6
- And now this Gospel (Good News of Jesus) has been proclaimed to you by those who preached in the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. – 1 Peter 1:12b
How to Pray: Watching & Praying with an Attitude of Thankfulness
Do you not see how all depends upon God and prayer? As long as He lives and loves, and hears and works, as long as there are souls with hearts closed to the Word of God, as long as there is work to be done in carrying the Word from next door, to down the street and across the city and country, as far as the ends of the earth; to those close by and far away; to those like us and completely different–pray without ceasing to know God more and see His purposes accomplished on the earth. Continue steadfast in prayer, watching intently with thanksgiving. These words are for every Christian without exception.
What to Pray: To be a People of the Word and Spirit
The Word of God in the form of the scriptures is being circulated without much difficulty in countries where there is freedom of religion. Any sermon of substance is preached from the Word of God (as all sermons need to be). Bibles–including various translations and versions are being read in homes and in schools. The Word is powerful and effective and will accomplish what God intended in each place, but how important it is to intercede in each of these places because there is very little blessing when it comes in word only. What divine blessing and power when it comes from and is illuminated by the Holy Spirit. When it is preached by the Holy Spirit sent down from heaven. We need to pray that the Holy Spirit will attend the Word in power through those that are filled with the Spirit and those who read the Word with the eyes of the Spirit of wisdom and understanding.
Pray for the spreading of the Scriptures, particularly in lands where the Scriptures are restricted or prohibited. Pray for increased preaching and teaching and reading, along with memorization and meditation, that it may all be in the Holy Spirit, with much prayer. Pray for the power of the Spirit with the Word in your own neighborhood, wherever it is being read or heard. Let every mention of “the Word of God” awaken prayer.
